I am the crafty one in the family and my sister likes to put in her “orders” over the phone. She recently called and asked me to decorate an irregularly shaped chalkboard for my niece’s apple themed birthday party. I went to Michaels, bought the chalkboard and brought it home. I decided to decorate the chalkboard using white vinyl lettering and an apple. I thought I would have to use trial and error and waste vinyl/paper to get the sizing right but I was wrong. I came up with a much easier way!
My scanner is set to scan at 300 dots per inch (dpi). I scanned the chalkboard and then opened the scanned image (File->Open) in Silhouette Studio. My scanner size is 8.5×11 so it fit perfectly on my letter size mat.
The image was a little crooked so I rotated it slightly to straighten it out. Then I added text and an apple shape.
I took a screenshot of Silhouette Studio, cropped it to just the chalkboard and sent it to my sister for approval. Here is the mockup from Silhouette Studio and the final product side by side.
I didn’t waste any vinyl or paper sizing the letters and shape for this project! This scanning method would work well if you do custom orders. This method will show the customer exactly what they will get with minimal work on your part. Next time you have a similar task, try using your scanner to get the perfect sizing in Silhouette Studio!
