Photoshop Video Tutorial: Typing Text Inside A Closed Path

August 5, 2011 By Kelly 19 Comments

Kirsten from Denmark watched my tutorial last week on on how to create and use text paths and sent me a question via e-mail. She knows how to type on the outside of a closed circle and have text fill the inside of the circle but how can she create text that follows along the inside a closed circular path? This is not to be confused with filling the inside of a circle with text. This is the final result of the tutorial.

Enjoy the video.

    Hi Kelly,

I don’t have Photoshop and use Microsoft Word. Is there a way to do Closed Text inside and outside (not at the same time) with MW? Thanks!!

Do you mean have text fill the whole inside of a circle or have the text hug the curve like in this tutorial? What version of MW do you have?

Thanks for responding quickly! I want to have the text hug the circle. I have 2002 version, but have updated version 2010. TIA!

I googled and found this. Sounds like it should work for you.

You are using a very old version of Photoshop. It may not have the functionality needed to do this. Can you describe your issue in detail?

I am following your steps: Ellipse tool, create the ellipse. (My layers look a little different than yours I have a “layer thumbnail” and “layer mask thumbnail”) Then I hold the control and select the layer (the marching ants appear). When I go to the paths window there is already a “shape/vector mask”, but I create a working path as you did in the video. With the working path selected I click on my text tool and hover over the marching ants…nothing changes. When I click the text tool on the circle, or in it, the text just stays normal. I know that this is a really old version but I seem to have all the “features” you are describing but it is just not working.

It sounds like you are doing all the right things. If your cursor doesn’t change then maybe it is not possible to make text paths in PS 7.0? You might want to do a google search to find out. Good luck!

The theme is Suffusion and you can download it from WordPress. I think it came with my installation.
