Why can’t Cricut Craft Room update your firmware? Why does Cricut Craft Room hang or get “stuck”? I may have the answer for you.
I have had my Cricut Expression since 2008. The last firmware update I did on it was 2.34 so that it could be used with Cricut DesignStudio. Recently I tried to install and run Cricut Craft Room on my laptop. The program installed just fine but when I tried to use the program, it told me I needed to update the firmware of my Cricut Expression.
I followed the onscreen firmware update instructions but the update kept failing and restarting my Expression at different points during the three part update process.
I wasn’t sure what was wrong. It was a Saturday and Cricut support was closed so I started to Google the issue. I found a post stating that I should temporarily disable my anti-virus program. I tried that and it didn’t work. Another post I found said that I should download Cricut Design Studio, do a firmware update to version 2.34 and then do the update to 2.43 with Cricut Craft Room. I tried that as well (even though my firmware was already at 2.34) and it didn’t work.
I finally called Cricut support and the support person asked me questions about what I had already done to try and update the firmware. She then asked me to go to http://speedtest.net and do a speed test of my Internet connection. This was my test result. The key number to note is the upload speed.
I told the Cricut support person the results and she said that my upload speed needs to be at least a constant 1 Mbps for Cricut Craft Room to update my firmware and work properly. As you can see my upload speed was above 1 Mbps when I did the test but it varies constantly. If I am in the middle of a firmware update with Cricut Craft Room and it drops below 1 Mbps then my update will fail. If I press Cut in Cricut Craft Room and the upload speed drops below 1 Mbps then Craft Room won’t cut. She said there is no way to update my Cricut Expression firmware without using Cricut Craft Room. Then she suggested I sign up for a faster Internet connection or try the firmware update in the middle of the night when upload speeds may be higher.
The Cricut Craft Room on my laptop just doesn’t suffer from the failed firmware updates. The program also hangs when initializing Craft Room and connecting to my Cricut account.
I saw many posts online from people wondering why they can’t install their firmware updates or why Craft Room software gets stuck. Check your Internet speed at http://speedtest.net and see if that is the culprit.
I hope this post saves someone a lot of time and frustration debugging this issue. I was never able to update my Cricut and now use a (affiliate link) Silhouette Portrait electronic die cutting machine. It does not require a connection to the Internet to cut.
