I love spending time with my family of 4. Quality family time gives us a chance to talk and find out the details of what is going on in each other’s lives. The kids and I are are always running from one activity to the next. My husband works long hours. Our kids are 5 and 7. They seem to change so quickly in their likes/dislikes, mannerisms, favorite quotes, etc. I am with them most of the time but I feel like my husband misses out on a lot. Finding time when all four of us are together without other commitments or distractions can be tough.
We all love to watch movies so a movie night is a perfect family gathering. I’m not sure my kids know a person can watch a movie without eating popcorn. To prepare for our movie night, the kids and I went to Walmart to buy the Rio 2 Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital HD combo and Pop Secret popcorn. The purchase of the movie and popcorn costs less than one night out for our family at the movies. You can spend less by using this coupon to get $1 off any Pop Secret popcorn at Walmart while supplies last.
I wanted to add more interaction to our family movie night so I introduced a crafting competition before the movie. The competition involved decorating a popcorn container in the theme of the movie. The entries are anonymous and my readers vote for the winner. The winner gets to wear the prestigious faux crown that we wear on our birthday.
Rio 2 involved the rainforest, birds, frogs and Carnaval. These are the supplies that we used. I did pull a few more things like paper and adhesive from my craft stash while we worked.
After dinner we all gathered around the table. My son wanted me to do a 3-2-1 countdown to kick off the competition. I can’t show you any photos from the actual crafting because we want entries to be anonymous. We each made our own container but it was definitely a group effort. We laughed so much and it was so funny how everyone’s personalities came out in their crafting style. My daughter thanked me enthusiastically for making movie night so fun. My son gave me a big kiss and told me that I am the best mom EVER! Here are results of our craftiness!
After the crafting, it was time to make the Pop Secret popcorn in our microwave. The kids were really impatient as our house filled with the delicious smell of popcorn. I didn’t want to use our decorated popcorn containers to eat from during the movie because I was afraid we would accidentally eat some of our design and choke. We all shared one large popcorn container and that made us sit a little closer. It’s time for Rio 2!
The movie was so much fun and the kids were up dancing around the room during several parts. The crafting and movie night did bring us closer. Today one member of the family is still getting teased a little about something that happened during our movie night. My family and I would love it if you help determine who gets to wear the crown! Please click on the heart in the upper right corner of the ONE popcorn container below that you like best. I will do a follow up post on July 28, 2014 where I will reveal who created each masterpiece and the winner!
Add a twist to your next movie night to make it one that you and your family will remember! Come back next week to see who won our crafting competition.
