Day 3 of the #HolidayCraftParty with Weekend Craft features home decor items. At the bottom of the post, we also have a $25 Michaels gift card giveaway and a holiday themed link party! If you missed them, you can check out Day 1 (ornaments) here and Day 2 (gift tags) here.

HolidayCraftParty

I was recently in Hobby Lobby when I saw their glass blocks on an end cap. The blocks had sample projects shown on the front. One of the projects was a glass block wrapped up as a present with lights inside. That gave me the idea for this Christmas home decor item. I used vinyl and my Silhouette to cut out WE WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS in the shape of a Christmas tree. Then I wrapped the block with ribbon and a bow. This Christmas glass block is going to be a Christmas gift but my kids have requested their own blocks with their own favorite holiday sayings. They love to give me custom orders.

Supplies:

  • 6 inch glass block
  • 6 inch square of dark red vinyl (Oracal 631)
  • 6 inch square of transfer tape
  • 1.5 inch wide wired edged ribbon
  • Silhouette Portrait (affiliate link)
  • Silhouette mat (affiliate link)
  • Silhouette hook (affiliate link)
  • glue dots adhesive
  • popsicle stick

Directions:

1. Download my We Wish You A Merry Christmas cut file for Silhouette Studio here. This file is only for your personal use.

Open the cut file in Silhouette Studio. Add the vinyl to a Silhouette mat and use the Silhouette machine to cut the design. Remove the vinyl with backing from the mat.

3. Weed the vinyl. First, remove the vinyl outside the rounded square. Then use the Silhouette hook to remove the letters but leave the inner pieces of the letters O, A and R.

4. Peel the backing off the transfer tape and place it on top of the vinyl. I used a popsicle stick and pressed down on the transfer tape to make sure it was adhered to the vinyl. Then peel the vinyl off the vinyl backing making sure the insides of the letters is transferred to the transfer tape.

5. Apply the transfer tape and vinyl to the glass block. To minimize bubbles, adhere the middle of the vinyl first and then push out from the inside. I used a popsicle stick to press down on the transfer tape to help the vinyl stick.

6. Peel back the transfer tape which leaves the vinyl on the glass block.

7. Create the bow. I am NOT good at making bows! I followed this YouTube video by The Woodland Elf on how to make a 6 loop bow. I left about 9 inches for the tail of my ribbon in the video. I also cut off a piece of the wired edge of my ribbon to tie the ribbon loops together.

It still took me many, many, many tries to get a semi-decent bow. The wired edge of the ribbon I chose kept separating from the sheer part of the ribbon. This is the amount of ribbon I wasted due to the separating issue. It was so frustrating but I was determined to get it done!

When the ribbon is complete, make sure you have two long tails for the bow to wrap around the block.

8. I used large glue dot adhesive on the bottom of the bow and the bottom corners of the glass block to adhere the ribbon and bow to the glass block. Then I cut off the excess ribbon on the bottom of the block so I wouldn’t block the block opening in case I want to put something inside.

I feel your pain about trying to get a semi decent looking bow! It’s definitely my least favorite crafting technique. Your block turned out lovely, and thanks for the free cut file!

Thank you Malia! I had never applies such a large piece of vinyl before so I had to do it twice before it looked good.
