I love making gifts for others so I eagerly signed up for the 2015 Ornament Exchange. My swap partner is Lyn who blogs as Mid Michigan Mom. She is currently in school pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. I decided to make Lyn a Christmas ornament related to nursing.
Supplies
I spotted a metal heart ornament at Michaels that I thought would be perfect for Lyn. I tried chalk paint for the first time for this project. The result?
I loved the coverage of the paint and the matte finish.

- white acrylic paint
- silver ribbon
- contact paper
- rubbing alcohol
- paint brush

Instructions
This was my first time using chalky paint so I read the directions. First, I used rubbing alcohol to clean the metal ornament. Then I used a dry brush to apply a thin coat of paint on the front of the ornament. A second coat of paint was applied an hour later.
Next, I used the Silhouette and Silhouette mat to cut the nurse hat design on contact paper. You can download the design for your own personal use:
These are the Silhouette Studio cut settings that I used for the contact paper.
I used transfer paper to lift the contact paper off the paper backing and then applied it to the heart ornament. Next, I painted one coat of white acrylic paint using the same brush and brush stroke as when I painted the red. I peeled off the large piece of contact paper and use tweezers to carefully remove the small cross.
I added a ribbon to hang the ornament and the Christmas ornament for nurses was finished. It looks beautiful on the tree!
The Ornament Swap
My swap partner Lyn also posted the ornaments she made for me today. She was generous enough to make an ornament for each member of my family!
