Last year, Michelle of Weekend Craft and I shared our Christmas crafts with you during our Holiday Craft Party. This year, we’ve invited three awesome bloggers to join us. Please welcome Emily of Two Purple Couches, Christine of Where The Smiles Have Been and Tiffany from The House Down The Lane to the Holiday Craft Party! My family loves to travel and we went on several memorable trips this year. I re-live our good times every year so I created this vacation photos ornament. Don’t miss the giveaway for Michaels and Minted.com gift cards near the end of the post.
Supplies
- links in this supply list are affiliate links
- Celebrate-It cube paper mache ornament from Michaels
- DecoArt Americana Paint in Tuscan Red
- Modge Podge – gloss finish
- oil based Sharpie in metallic gold
- white gesso
- foam brush
- masking tape
- scissors
- ornament stand (optional)
Instructions
Hang the paper mache ornament on an ornament stand for easy painting and drying. Apply two coats of white gesso (as primer) to the paper mache ornament. Then apply two coats of red acrylic paint to the ornament. Remember to allow for adequate drying time in between coats of gesso and paint.
Use Modge Podge to add a photo to each square except for the top square. I have read that humidity can affect the application of Modge Podge so do this somewhere that is not humid.
For each square:
- add Modge Podge with a foam brush
- place the photo
- smooth the photo down making sure there are no air bubbles underneath
- use the foam brush to apply Modge Podge over the photo
The bottom right photo is the square after the Modge Podge dried.
For the top of the ornament, I hand wrote the year and my name using an oil based Sharpie. Then my husband and kids wrote their names too. The Sharpie worked really well on the acrylic paint. I waited about 20 minutes before I applied two layers of Modge Podge with a foam brush to finish off the vacation photos ornament.
When I hang this vacation photos ornament on our tree every year, I’ll remember all the great vacations we took this year!
Here’s a closeup view.

Hi, Kelly ~ This is such a great way to remember vacations! We have a lot of ornaments that are associated with memories, and it’s so much fun to unpack them each year and talk about the experiences. I can’t wait to make a couple of these!
What a clever and creative way to showcase a memory!
