My kids loved the chevron Mickey Mouse shirts that I made for them to wear on our Disney cruise. I made shirts for me and my husband too. A family has got to match right? Each person picked out their own glitter heat transfer vinyl color. My kids picked slightly different shades of blue. My husband chose green and I selected purple. This Mickey Mouse shirt project is perfect for this month’s fabric and apparel themed Silhouette Challenge. Glitter heat transfer vinyl is one of my favorite crafting supplies! There are two different layers to heat transfer vinyl.
Making The Mickey Mouse Shirt
Wash, dry and iron the shirt before starting this project. This relaxes the material and will help the heat transfer vinyl adhere better. Then download and install the free Waltograph font to use for the names on the shirts.
I opened my mouse head Chevron design in the Silhouette Studio software. My heat transfer vinyl was loaded in to the Silhouette shiny side down using the load media button.
When using heat transfer vinyl, it is important to remember that the image you cut must be the mirror image of the final design. Mirroring the design is easy. Select the entire design, right click and select Flip Horizontal. My mouse head design is symmetrical so I didn’t need to flip the design. The design I cut for the kid shirts was smaller than the one I cut for the adult shirts.
Select Silhouette->Cut Settings from the menu and choose Heat Transfer Material Flocked from the Material Type list. That is the setting I use for glitter heat transfer vinyl.
Next, hit the Send to Silhouette button for the Silhouette to cut the design. After the design is cut, remove all the vinyl on the shiny liner that will not be ironed onto the shirt. This is known as weeding. Start by lifting the vinyl up at one corner.
Once the design is weeded, place it on the shirt. Cover the design with a piece of cotton fabric. I used a well loved baby blanket. Push down on the design using a hot iron for 60 seconds. You may have to do this several times to cover the entire design. This is where a heat press would come in handy!
After the ironing is done, wait a few seconds for the shiny layer to cool and lift it up starting at one corner. If the design is adhered, the shiny layer will lift off leaving the design on the shirt. If it is not adhered, just smooth down the shiny layer over the design again and repeat the ironing.
Next I cut the name using black heat transfer vinyl using the Heat Transfer Material cut setting. Remember to mirror the name before cutting. If you are doing more than one shirt, I suggest cutting all the names at the same time to save on vinyl and time. The Waltograph font has a lot of little parts in it to weed so I used my trusty Silhouette hook tool to help me weed. Then I ironed the name on the shirt below the design.
Voila! The chevron Mickey Mouse shirt is done and ready to be worn on our Disney cruise!

Great shirts!! Super cute kids. I hope you have a great cruise! – Marni
These are SO cool!!!! I would love to make some of those for hubby, Em and I!!!! That would be so pretty. I also LOVE that heat transfer!
Hugs
These are adorable! Matching shirts are ALWAYS the way to go- especially at Disney!
These turned out great! We are going to Disney the summer of ’17 (we go every other year!) and I should try to make some similar shirts for my family. Last time we went I didn’t have my Silhouette yet and I spend a fortune on Esty getting some personalized shirts. Your tutorial is great and so clear, too!

Thank you for the tutorial on the DIY. Adorable Mickey Mouse shirts 🙂
Georgeous! The Mickey shape looks fabulous with the chevron fill.
Kelly, the t-shirts are just adorable and so are your kids. I don’t have a cutting machine, but my daughter has a Cricut and has a lot of fun creating.
Thank you Lisa! I have a Cricut too but it’s an old one and I never use it. It’s on my “to sell” list. Just haven’t gotten to it yet.
